What is the Great Loop Challenge?
On 8 August 2026, Red left DeLand, Florida, aboard a custom 30-foot Portā DARK:30 Velocity to take on more than 7,300 nautical miles. The route is longer than the one he completed in 2024, and he is aiming to complete it faster.
The Great Loop is a continuous circuit of the eastern United States and Canada: up the Atlantic seaboard, through the Great Lakes, down the inland rivers to the Gulf, and back around Florida. Most who attempt it take a year. Red is doing it at pace.
The 2026 challenge continues the mission Red began in 2024, rallying supporters to help fund safer, more effective treatments for children battling cancer.

Hefring’s involvement
Hefring has donated a complete IMAS system to Red and his team for the duration of the challenge. Installed aboard the DARK:30 Velocity, IMAS processes data on board and streams the boat’s position to the live map above, so supporters can follow the journey as it unfolds.
IMAS provides guidance to the crew, but it does not control the vessel. Impacts are logged as measured, giving the map a direct record of the conditions encountered along the route.
What else IMAS is doing aboard
Beyond the live tracking shown here, the team has the full IMAS feature set available on a route where conditions can change quickly and help is often far away.
- AI Speed Guidance
- Real-time speed guidance using advanced AI models.
- Fuel Savings
- Real-time fuel monitoring and AI EcoSpeed guidance on every trip.
- Prevent Breakdowns

Every mile of the challenge supports the mission to fund safer treatments for children with cancer.
